Constitutional Convention/History Scavenger Hunt


To access the Media Center subscription databases:

Go to the BRRHS home page: http://www.brrsd.net/curric/HS/library/index.html
On Left sidebar - Select HS Library
You will be directed to the BRRHS Library Webpage, where you can view a list of all the Subscription Databases. Click on the link to the database that you want to search and enter the User ID and Password in the login page.

Suggested Databases: All of these databases can be also be accessed from the Library Website; just scroll down until you see the database link.


ABC-CLIO US History & Government: Enter your search term in the search box and check the areas you wish to search (History or Government). Click on the link under "Search Results" to view the articles retrieved. You can filter your results by checking the appropriate box on the left side of the page (narratives, images, maps, events, etc.) and clicking the "Filter My Results" button at the bottom of the list. You will find the MLA citation format at the end of the article.

American National Biographies: Provides information on deceased Americans only. You can type a person's name in the Quick Search box, or browse by alphabetical listing of a name (use the "Browse" tab at the top of the page). You can also use the Advanced Search option (click on the "Search" tab at the top of the page) to search by additional criteria and characteristics (e.g., ethnicity, occupation, birth date).
Citation information is included at the end of the article, but you need to insure that it is in the proper MLA format.

Biography Resource Center:Provides information on living and deceased persons of both American and International heritage.
You can search using the quick "Search by Name" box, but make sure that you click the appropriate button below to define the approach of the search (i.e., Name Contains, or Start of Last Name). You can also Browse categories or use the Advanced Search to combine terms (i.e., use Boolean Operators).

Facts on File: Look at the History database, American History Online. Type your search term(s) in the search box. When you review your results, notice that there are several tabs (located above the results) that provide categories for the information retrieved. You may select the type of information you are interested in by category (biographies, primary sources, etc.)
At the end of the article under "Citation Information" you will find the elements that you will need to format an MLA citation.

For History Scavenger Hunt, use these databases as well:


Historical New York Times: You can enter a Keyword search, and then select your area of interest categorized by dates (see tabs at top of results list). Or, you can limit your search by using the Advanced Search feature, by defining a specific date range, article type (use check boxes), title or author.

CQ's Supreme Court Collection: The initial search page provides options for you to search by keyword or to access a list of case topics that will bring you to the full text of the case decision.
Click on the "Cite Now" tab at the top of the case description, and select the MLA format.

National Archives Founding Fathers**: Profiles on each delegate.

TeachingAmericanHistory.org: A number of articles are proivded by the Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs at Ashland University. including delegate profiles, background, day-by-day summary.

Encarta Encyclopedia: Background information and delegate profiles (click delegate name links in text for profile).

Library of Congress: Documents from the Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention.

Journals of the Continental Congress: Records of the daily proceedings of the Congress as kept by the office of its secretary.

Citation Generators: These sites will assist you in formatting MLA citations. Remember to check the formats against other guides. You need to insure that the Generators have provided correct formatting.

NoodleTools: Click on the link for Noodle Bib Express (center column), and then select MLA format. WOrk your way through the screens by entering the citation element requested.
